Do You Know the Real Jesus?

Every person eventually faces the decisive question Jesus posed to His disciples: who do you say that I am? Culture, family traditions, and personal preferences often lead people to fashion a convenient, comfortable Jesus in their own image. Yet constructing a malleable savior out of human desires creates nothing more than a powerless idol. True biblical faith goes beyond second-hand knowledge or wish-granting assumptions to embrace Jesus as Peter confessed Him: the promised Messiah and the Son of the living God.

The heart of Christ is vividly revealed in the account of the woman caught in adultery from John chapter 8. While religious critics sought to weaponize the law and humiliate a broken sinner, Jesus turned the mirror back onto their own self-righteous hearts. Once the accusers dispersed, Jesus met the woman not with crushing condemnation, but with life-giving mercy. He proved that no human failure or guilt is beyond the reach of His cleansing grace.

Nevertheless, this redemptive grace always calls the sinner to transformation. When we discard the parts of Scripture we dislike and keep only what pleases our natural inclinations, we have not worshiped the living Lord; we have sculpted an idol and called it Jesus. A counterfeit Savior cannot rescue anyone from sin or death. Peter's bold confession must be ours: 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.' Knowing Jesus requires opening the Scriptures with humble, yielding hearts. We must let Him define who He is, rather than fashioning Him into who we wish Him to be. Only the biblical Christ holds the words of eternal life.

We often encounter this same harsh posture in human hearts, and tragically, even within churches. When believers become known for self-righteous contempt rather than the gentle love of Christ, they distort the gospel and push struggling people away. Yet observe how Jesus responds in the dust of the temple courtyard. He does not minimize sin, but neither will He participate in hypocritical cruelty. He silences the self-righteous mob by exposing their own inward guilt until every rock drops from their hands. When we are tempted to condemn others, we must remember our own desperate need for mercy. The Savior we follow exposes hypocritical pride while opening a doorway of hope for the brokenhearted.

Refusing to forgive yourself after the Lord has pardoned you elevates your personal verdict above the finished work of the cross. When the religious crowd dispersed, Jesus looked at the trembling woman and asked, 'Has no one condemned you?' Her answer echoed the reality of every redeemed soul: 'No one, Lord.' When Jesus settles your case, your sentence is cancelled forever. Rest today in His complete, unearned cleansing, and leave your condemnation buried in the dust.

His final words to her were both merciful and uncompromising: 'Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.' True grace does not grant permission to stay comfortable in our rebellion; it provides the divine power to break free from it. A counterfeit gospel promises cheap forgiveness without calling for repentance, allowing individuals to claim Christ while treasuring their old habits. But when a sinner encounters the holy love of God, the desire to remain in the mud dissolves. This woman did not leave wondering how much she was giving up; she departed in awe of the One who had ransomed her life. God's grace rescues us out of dark traps so that we might walk as children of light. Holiness is not a joyless legalistic burden, but our grateful response to overwhelming love.

It is impossible to experience a direct collision with an oncoming truck and walk away without a single scratch. In a far greater and infinitely more glorious sense, it is impossible to genuinely collide with the resurrected Son of God and remain spiritually identical to who you were before. Salvation is not a trivial cosmetic adjustment, nor is it a simple religious certificate to hang on the wall. It is spiritual resurrection. When Christ enters a life, He displaces old allegiances, reorders disordered desires, and replaces selfish ambition with a hunger for His kingdom. If your faith has never demanded surrender, redirected your feet, or softened your treatment of neighbors, ask the Lord to examine your heart. We must not be satisfied with an easy, nominal religion that leaves our lives untouched. Cast aside every casual pretense today, and ask Jesus to not merely make you better, but to make you entirely new.
