Press with Purpose

Pastor preaches from Philippians 3:12–14, where Paul acknowledges that he has not yet reached perfection but presses on because Christ has made him his own. The sermon’s central message is to press with purpose as we seek to become more like Christ and live faithfully in God’s kingdom.
Pastor explains that Christian growth begins with grace, not human achievement. Through faith in Christ, believers receive a new identity and are called to keep pursuing a life that pleases God. Striving does not mean earning salvation; it means responding to Christ with faithful effort.
Paul’s words also call believers to leave the past behind and strain toward what lies ahead. Past failures, regrets, and disappointments need not define the future God sets before us. Like a runner leaning toward the finish line, we keep moving toward the goal and the promised prize in Christ.
The sermon closes by urging the congregation to persevere through difficulty, trust Christ for strength, and live with the hope of hearing, “Well done.” Pastor invites listeners to respond through salvation, rededication, church membership, and prayer.

Day 1
Held by Christ, Pressing On
Philippians 3:12; Ephesians 2:8-9
Paul is honest about the unfinished work in his life: he has not already obtained the goal or become perfect. Yet his effort rests on a deeper truth: Christ Jesus has made him His own. Christian growth does not begin with proving our worth to God. It begins with receiving the grace God gives through faith. From that secure belonging, we learn to follow Jesus more faithfully. We will still stumble, discover areas that need change, and depend on God’s mercy. That is not a reason to give up. It is a reason to keep going with humility and hope. Today, remember that your progress does not earn Christ’s love. Because you belong to Him, you can press on—seeking to love, obey, and reflect Him in the ordinary choices before you.
- Reflect
- Where do you need to rely on Christ’s grace rather than trying to prove yourself?
- Prayer
- Jesus, thank you for making me yours; help me grow in faith and follow you today.
Day 2
Growth Takes Practice
Philippians 3:12; 1 Thessalonians 4:1
Paul says, “I press on.” His words suggest a purposeful pursuit, not a claim that he has already arrived. Following Jesus involves daily choices: walking in ways that please God, trusting Him, and learning to keep His commands. This effort is not a way to purchase salvation; it is a response to the grace we have received. Some days growth feels steady, and some days it feels small. Still, God can use repeated acts of faithfulness to shape us. We can ask for help when our strength fails, and begin again when we fall short. Choose one practical way to follow Christ today: speak truth, make peace, serve someone, or turn away from what harms your neighbor. Do it not to earn God’s favor, but because you are learning to live as one who belongs to Him.
- Reflect
- What is one concrete step of faithfulness you can take today?
- Prayer
- God, strengthen me to walk in a way that pleases you, one faithful step at a time.
Day 3
The Past Is Not the Finish Line
Philippians 3:13; Acts 9:1-19
Paul knew that his past included serious harm to followers of Jesus. After encountering Christ, he did not pretend that the past had never happened. But he also did not let it define the whole of his life or prevent him from serving God. “Forgetting what lies behind” is not a command to deny pain, erase memory, or avoid making amends. It is a call not to be ruled by what cannot be changed. When guilt weighs on us, we can confess our sins and receive God’s forgiveness. When regret returns, we can ask what repair is possible and then turn toward the work God places before us. The past may teach us, but it does not have to keep us stuck. In Christ, there is grace for honest repentance and hope for a faithful next step.
- Reflect
- What past regret or failure do you need to bring honestly to God as you take your next step?
- Prayer
- Merciful God, forgive what needs forgiving, guide me toward repair, and help me move forward in hope.
Day 4
Lean Toward the Goal
Philippians 3:13-14; Hebrews 12:1-2
Paul pictures a life reaching forward toward what lies ahead. The image is not of someone who has no weakness or weariness; it is of someone who keeps orienting toward the goal. In the Christian life, our attention matters. Dwelling endlessly on yesterday’s failures can keep us from seeing today’s faithful opportunity. So can distraction, fear, or the pressure to measure ourselves against others. Paul’s goal is found in Christ: a life shaped by knowing Him and answering God’s call. We do not run alone or by sheer willpower. We look to Jesus, who sustains His people, and we encourage one another along the way. Ask God to show you the next faithful thing—not every detail of the road, just the next step. Then take it with patience, trusting Him with the outcome.
- Reflect
- What is one next step that would help you focus on Christ’s call rather than on distraction or discouragement?
- Prayer
- Jesus, keep my eyes on you and give me courage to take the next faithful step.
Day 5
Press with Purpose
Philippians 3:14; 2 Timothy 4:7-8
Paul’s pressing has a purpose: to pursue the goal and prize of God’s call in Christ Jesus. His language reminds us that Christian life is not aimless striving. We are called to know Christ, grow in His likeness, and live in hope of the life God promises. The prize is not a trophy for self-made perfection; it is rooted in God’s grace and faithfulness. This purpose can steady us when life is demanding. It can also shape how we treat others: our witness, choices, and service matter because we belong to Christ. Today, ask whether your energy is carrying you toward love of God and neighbor. If you feel tired, receive rest and encouragement rather than condemning yourself. Then continue at the pace God gives, trusting that the One who called you will remain faithful.
- Reflect
- How can remembering God’s call shape the way you use your energy today?
- Prayer
- Faithful God, give my life clear purpose and help me press on in love, hope, and trust.
